There is no doubt that everyone’s spirits lift when they catch a glance of the sparkling ripples of the waves, as they crash against the coast. A deep breath of fresh sea air lifts our spirits, and it is almost as if we can feel the negative ions cleansing our spirits.
Whilst Sophia and I live amongst some of the most amazing woodlands in an area classified as Outstanding Natural Beauty, we cannot deny the child like excitement we get when stepping on to miles and miles of uncrowded sandy beaches. The restorative effect of sea air on our wellbeing and happiness is obvious. This effect has been well researched, and papers published on the positive psychological effect sea air has on us all.
Breathing in sea air reduces stress as our serotonin levels (the happiness hormone) increases. We both find that this mental boost is coupled with our love of collecting sea treasures. The yielding up of these treasures are a result of the moon’s force on the oceans. This Luna magic brings us seashells, sea glass and driftwood, all of which have their place in Wicca life.
As the element of water rules emotions and matters of the heart, seashells can be used in love spells particularly as the Goddess Aphrodite is associated with seashells.
Shells can also be used for making runes, can be used in bath rituals, or placed somewhere that has special meaning for you. In the past, seashells were linked with money as they were used as currency, so they have an association with prosperity. Keep a small shell in your purse as a good luck keepsake.
The original function of shells were for the protective covering of a sea creature, Place some by your front and back door to help protect your home. You could even try adding a small one to your pet's collar to keep them safe.
Some seashells have their own individual meaning which we will write about another time, but some of our spell kits do include the shells we have collected along the way. We hope they bring you as much joy as they did while we were collecting them.
Wishing you all joy and happiness.
